The Spanish family Alvarez de Toledo still use vaqueros to transport their cattle heards from their low land winter pasture in the Extremedura to their summer pasture in the Sierra Gredos. The journey takes around 10 days as the cattle meander slowly along the cañadas, routes used since Roman times, up the mountain pass higher and higher until they reach their summer pasture.
Water is scarce and the journey is long. The horse is invaluable like the rivers and lakes along the way. Each village we pass turns out to feed us or just watch us go by, some horse men joining us out of nowhere to help guide the cattle.
